Open a book, open a world!

Ongoing Project

Become a volunteer school reader and make a difference to a child’s life story.

1 in 4 children left primary school last year unable to read well. This means they are unable to fully access their secondary education and this can have a lifelong impact. Schoolreaders wants to help change this. We now operate in every county in England, supporting over 27,000 children each week. More schools are joining us every day and we currently have schools in your area waiting for volunteers.

Our volunteers must be able to commit to at least an hour each week for a full year during term time although holidays can of course be taken.

An Enhanced DBS check will be undertaken, which is organised and paid for by the school a volunteer is matched with.

Volunteers must be over 18 and have a good standard of written and spoken English but we do not require any specific qualifications.

How you can help

When matched with a school and once DBS and safeguarding processes have been carried out, volunteers will meet with a teacher to discuss in more detail the role and how reading sessions will be organised.  Reading sessions are usually carried out on 1:1 basis in a quiet area outside the classroom.
