Little Reeds, Big Community-Greenford

Hello, my name is Alan, and I organised Little Reeds, Big Community – Greenford as an individual community project.

The idea behind the project was simple: to use music and the harmonica to bring local residents together, create opportunities to meet new people, and build stronger community connections.

One of the aims of the project was to make music accessible to local residents, including people who may not be confident or fluent in English. Music can bring people together even when language may sometimes be a barrier.

With support from the Greenford Connect Our Community Fund, I delivered eight weekly harmonica sessions in Greenford. I planned and delivered the lessons, prepared the learning materials and supported participants throughout the course.

 During the sessions, participants learned basic harmonica techniques and practised different pieces of music together. It was wonderful to see people learning, helping each other and enjoying music together.I think one of the most important outcomes was that the project became about more than just learning an instrument. Over the weeks, participants became more familiar with each other, talked together and enjoyed learning as a group.

From our feedback, 91% felt the sessions helped them meet new people, 91% felt more connected to their local community, 91% felt workshop delivered at an appropriate place, 91% of would recommend this workshop to their family or friends.

This showed me that a relatively simple activity like learning music together can help create meaningful community connections.

I also learned a lot from delivering the project. People learn at different speeds, so I needed to adjust the lessons and make sure everyone could participate comfortably. I learned that listening to participants and being flexible is just as important as having a good lesson plan.

Although the funded project has now finished, I hope the connections created through the sessions will continue. I would like to keep in touch with participants and explore opportunities for future harmonica activities if there is enough interest and a suitable venue.

Finally, I would encourage anyone thinking about making a difference in their town to start with something you enjoy and can share with others. A community project doesn’t have to be complicated. A simple idea can bring people together and create something meaningful.
