Acting Safe in Northolt

Tie-Dye Drama is a London-based arts organisation that uses drama as an inclusive and creative approach to support and uplift communities. Our work centres on building confidence, supporting well-being, and inspiring imagination.

We were pleased to deliver this project in Northolt, working in partnership with John Chilton School to explore the theme of feeling safe in everyday environments.

This project was delivered with pupils at John Chilton School, a specialist setting, and focused on supporting young people to build confidence and awareness around personal safety in a way that was accessible, engaging, and tailored to a range of needs.

Before the workshops, we facilitated a focus group with pupils and staff to better understand what feeling safe meant to them and how best to adapt the sessions. This was invaluable in shaping the project. We learned the importance of using clear visual resources, adapting activities to suit a wide range of communication and mobility needs, and ensuring all pupils could access and participate fully, including those who use wheelchairs.

During the feedback session, pupils highlighted specific situations they wanted to explore, including feeling safe in restaurants and other public places. This directly informed the content of the workshops.

We delivered interactive, drama-based sessions that used a combination of visual prompts, discussion, and role-play to explore real-life scenarios. Pupils took part in creating and acting out scenes based on situations such as visiting restaurants, interacting with staff, and making safe choices in public environments. Activities were carefully structured to be inclusive, allowing all pupils to engage at their own level and in ways that suited their individual needs.

Pupils were highly engaged and responded positively to the adapted approach. Many demonstrated increased confidence in expressing their ideas and a clearer understanding of how to navigate different situations safely. The use of familiar, relevant scenarios helped to make the learning meaningful and practical.

This project reinforced the importance of flexibility and responsiveness when working in SEN settings. Taking time to listen to both pupils and staff, and adapting delivery accordingly, was key to creating a supportive and effective learning environment. Visual and experiential approaches proved particularly impactful in supporting understanding and participation.

We aim to continue developing inclusive approaches to safety-focused workshops, ensuring they are accessible to a wide range of learners. There is strong potential to build on this work through follow-up sessions and by expanding the range of real-life scenarios explored.

Advice to other organisations:
Work closely with staff and pupils to understand individual needs and preferences before delivering sessions. Be prepared to adapt your approach, using visual, practical, and flexible methods to support engagement. Ensure that all young people can access the learning in a way that works for them, and centre their voices when deciding which topics to explore.
