Hanwell Guerrilla Gardeners – Making Hanwell Green Again!-Your Voice, Your Town

Ongoing Project

Hanwell Guerrilla Gardeners: Growing a Greener, Safer Hanwell in 2026

We’re a community group in Hanwell, started by Dominic Kirkbride, Lynne Moulding and Olga Connolly in 2025. Our aim is to create and maintain green spaces across Hanwell to help make it a more pleasant and safer area for both people and wildlife. We take patches of unloved or unclaimed land and plant them up, or work with the council and local stakeholders to revitalise existing planting—while building a welcoming community of volunteers who want to get outdoors and make a difference.

Since launching, we’ve already made a visible impact. We’ve improved the flowerbeds at Hanwell Station (north side on Campbell Road), revitalised the raised beds at Cherington/Church Roads corner (opposite the health centre), and we are currently in the process of rejuvenating the Hanwell Clocktower flowerbeds. That project alone has brought together the community to raise nearly £2,000, and we’re aiming to have it fully planted by summer.

In 2026, we’re excited to take this work further with support from Ealing Council’s Your Voice, Your Town initiative. This project has been funded by Ealing Council through the Your Voice, Your Town initiative, which supports community-powered change across the borough.

With our £1,000 grant, we will deliver our project, Make Hanwell Green Again!, focusing on transforming more neglected spaces across Hanwell—particularly in Hanwell Broadway and North Hanwell, also including areas like the junction of Singapore Road and Eccleston Road (pushing our scope even further!). This will begin during April with our funding in place.

The funding will allow us to:

  • Purchase shared gardening tools to make volunteering more accessible
  • Invest in mature, resilient plants to create immediate impact in neglected areas
  • Install custom signage and stakes to show that spaces are cared for by the community, encouraging respect and reducing anti-social behaviour

This work directly supports the local priority of making Hanwell feel safe for everyone. Well-maintained green spaces don’t just look better—they discourage neglect, support biodiversity, and create places people feel comfortable using and enjoying.

We’ll continue to run open, inclusive volunteer sessions throughout 2026, building on our current model of public events that typically attract 5–10 volunteers, alongside a small core team. Everyone is welcome to get involved—whether that’s hands-on gardening, donating plants or (lending) tools, or simply helping us identify spaces in need.

We’re particularly excited about growing our volunteer base and mentoring new participants, helping more people feel a sense of ownership and pride in their local area. As outlined in our project commitments, we’ll also ensure these spaces are maintained long-term, not just planted once and left.

Throughout the project, we’ll share updates, photos, and progress with the community. You’ll be able to follow along both on the Do Something Good website and via our Facebook group, where we regularly post before-and-after photos, event details, and progress updates.

Ultimately, this project is about more than planting—it’s about people. By bringing residents together to improve their surroundings, we’re helping to build a greener, safer, and more connected Hanwell.
